Somalia is among the countries most vulnerable to climate change, experiencing recurring droughts, floods and environmental degradation that continue to threaten livelihoods, food security and community resilience. In recent years, prolonged droughts, failed rainy seasons and extreme weather events have affected millions of people and displaced many communities across the country.

Recognizing the urgent need for local action and local leadership, Nabaad, in partnership with YECO Somalia, has taken a step forward by launching an initiative that focuses on building the capacity of young people to understand and respond to climate change. The program aims to support youth engagement, promote climate awareness and encourage innovative solutions that contribute to climate resilience in Somalia.

Following the launch of this program, Nabaad selected Local Climate Champions (LCCs) from different districts who demonstrated strong interest and commitment to environmental action. These young people represent a new generation of advocates who will help raise awareness and mobilize communities around climate-related issues. Following the selection process, the Climate Champions participated in an on-boarding training program designed to strengthen their knowledge of climate change, climate crisis in Somalia and the role young people can play in advancing climate action. The training also focused leadership, designing inclusive and conflict-sensitive climate action, communication and community engagement skills to help participants effectively advocate for environmental sustainability.

The participants gained practical knowledge of climate change impacts in Somalia, leadership and advocacy skills, and strategies for community engagement, equipping them to raise awareness and drive local climate action.
